Woman with healthy, glossy brunette hair and soft natural waves, representing a post-winter Spring hair reset.

Winter Is Over. Is Your Hair Ready for Spring?

Winter may technically be packing its bags, but unfortunately, it doesn't always take the evidence with it.

Dry ends. Dull colour. A scalp that's suddenly become a little temperamental. Hair that looked perfectly respectable in June now seems to have developed its own agenda.

Sound familiar?

Months of cooler weather, indoor heating, hotter showers, heat styling, and generally asking quite a lot of our hair can leave strands feeling drier, flatter, frizzier or simply harder to manage.

But before you empty half the bathroom cabinet onto your head, here's the important part.

Your hair probably doesn't need everything. It needs the right things.

And Spring is a very good time to work out exactly what those things are.

What actually happened to your hair over winter?

Winter doesn't automatically damage everyone's hair.

Your hair type, colour history, chemical treatments, heat-styling habits, and even how often you wash all play a part.

But lower humidity, indoor heating, hot water, regular heat styling and months of friction from scarves, coats and collars can certainly contribute to hair feeling a little less fabulous by the end of the season.

Before buying anything new, have a proper look at your hair.

Hair feels heavy, coated or unusually flat? Start with cleansing.

Hair feels rough, thirsty or frizzy? Think hydration.

Hair is bleached, chemically processed or breaking? Consider repair.

Colour looks dull or has shifted in tone? Think refresh.

Scalp feels oily, flaky, uncomfortable or congested? Give your scalp some attention.

Hair is healthy, but you're reaching for heated tools more often? Protection may be all you need.

There. We've already saved you from buying six products when you might have needed only one.

1. Start with a proper cleanse

I adore a clean slate. I'm considerably less enthusiastic about scrubbing your hair into submission.

If dry shampoo, oils, styling products or general build-up have accumulated, an occasional deeper cleanse can help remove residue and leave hair feeling lighter and fresher.

But clarifying isn't a competition.

If your hair is already dry, coloured or sensitised, choose your cleanser carefully and follow with appropriate conditioning.

Products worth considering: look for professional clarifying or scalp-cleansing formulas from ranges such as R+Co and Davroe, tailored to your hair and scalp needs.

2. Put moisture back where it's needed

If your hair feels rough, frizzy or generally thirsty, conditioning is where I'd turn my attention next.

A good conditioner should form part of your regular routine, while a mask or treatment can provide additional care when your hair needs it.

Fine hair may prefer something lightweight. Coarse, curly, porous, or highly processed hair often benefits from richer conditioning.

And remember:

More product doesn't automatically equal more hydration. Sometimes it just equals more product.

Brands such as R+Co, Davroe, Joico, Oribe and Kerasilk offer different levels of conditioning, so choose according to your hair rather than whichever tub looks most impressive in the bathroom.

3. Repair damage, if you actually have damage

Dry hair and damaged hair aren't necessarily the same thing.

If your hair has been bleached, chemically processed, repeatedly heat styled or is showing increased breakage, a targeted repair treatment may be worthwhile.

This is where products such as K18 Leave-In Molecular Repair Hair Mask or Wella Professionals Ultimate Repair can make sense as part of an appropriate routine.

But don't diagnose every slightly dry end as catastrophic damage.

Sometimes your hair needs repair.

Sometimes it needs moisture.

And sometimes, quite frankly, it needs a haircut.

4. Refresh your colour without necessarily starting again

Spring always seems to make us look at our colour differently.

Suddenly, the brunette feels a little flat. The blonde needs waking up. Or you simply want more shine without committing to an entirely new colour.

The important thing is understanding that not every colour product does the same job.

Permanent colour

Designed for longer-lasting colour results and, depending on the formulation, grey coverage. Wella Koleston Perfect ME+ is one professional option.

Demi-permanent colour

Useful for tonal changes and refreshing existing colour with less commitment than permanent colour. Think Wella Color Touch.

Glaze

For a subtle tone and beautiful shine without necessarily wanting a major colour change. Wella Shinefinity sits beautifully here.

Colour-depositing mask

For temporary tonal maintenance and refreshing colour at home. Wella Color Fresh Mask makes this considerably less intimidating.

Professional colour requires a little more respect than simply choosing the prettiest swatch. Always follow the manufacturer's instructions, including developer requirements and allergy testing, and seek professional colour advice when needed.

5. Don't forget what's underneath all that hair

Your scalp is skin. Treat it accordingly.

Some people emerge from winter noticing increased oiliness, dryness, flaking, sensitivity, or product buildup.

That doesn't mean everyone needs an aggressive scalp scrub.

If your scalp needs attention, choose products designed for the actual concern. NioxinDavroeand FARCOM PROFESSIONAL all offer scalp-focused options in their ranges.

And if you have persistent, severe or unexplained scalp symptoms, that's something to discuss with an appropriate healthcare professional rather than continuing to add products.

6. Let your Spring hair breathe

This is the part I love.

Spring doesn't necessarily call for perfectly ironed, highly manufactured hair.

Natural movement. Soft bends. Believable texture. Hair that actually moves when you do.

I've always been a believer that your hair texture should look believable, not forced.

Try lighter leave-ins, flexible styling products and texture sprays rather than automatically reaching for something heavy.

Products from R+Co and Oribe can be brilliant here, particularly when you want movement and definition without hair feeling stiff or overly styled.

We want polish.

We just don't need the hair looking freshly laminated.

7. Protect before you style

More heat doesn't automatically mean a better result.

If you're using a hairdryer, straightener, curling iron, or hot brush, use an appropriate heat protectant and set the temperature to only what your hair actually requires.

My simple rule:

Heat protectant first. Temperature second. Technique third.

And try not to repeatedly iron the same section because the first pass wasn't controlled.

Your straightener doesn't need to prove how hot it can get. That's not the competition we're entering.

Spring Hair Reset FAQs

Why does my hair feel dry after winter?

Lower humidity, indoor heating, hot showers, heat styling and chemical processing can all contribute to hair feeling drier or rougher.

Should I clarify my hair after winter?

If your hair feels coated or heavy, or has significant product buildup, an occasional clarifying cleanse may help. It isn't something every hair type needs constantly.

What's the difference between dry and damaged hair?

Dry-feeling hair may primarily need conditioning and moisture support. Damage involves changes to the hair structure and can be associated with bleaching, chemical processing, excessive heat and mechanical stress.

How can I refresh my hair colour for Spring?

Depending on the result you want, options include permanent colour, demi-permanent colour, a glaze or a colour-depositing treatment. They perform different jobs, so choose according to your desired result and level of commitment.

Do I need heat protectant every time I heat style?

If you're using heated styling tools, applying an appropriate heat-protection product according to its directions is a sensible part of your styling routine.

My final word

Spring hair shouldn't be about throwing out your entire routine and starting again.

Look at your hair. Feel it. Pay attention to what has actually changed.

Maybe it needs moisture. Maybe your colour needs waking up. Maybe your scalp needs a little more attention. Or perhaps your hair is perfectly healthy, and all it really needs is a trim and permission to move again.

Don't fix six problems when you only have one.

Give your hair what it needs, leave alone what it doesn't and head into Spring with hair that looks healthy, believable and, most importantly, like yours.

That's always going to look considerably more expensive than trying too hard.
